TPO Is Being Banned: Here’s What It Actually Means
The TPO Ban.
What You Need to Know.
TPO is one of the biggest conversations in the nail industry right now - but what actually is it, and what does the ban mean for you as a nail tech?
TPO is a photo initiator used in gel products. It works with your lamp to start the curing process, turning gel from liquid to solid.
It has been used in nail products for years and there is no direct evidence showing harm when used correctly in salon settings.
The ban is not because of problems in nail salons or with nail techs using products safely.
TPO received a stricter safety classification following wider laboratory testing involving raw ingredient exposure and ingestion. Because of this, it is now being removed from cosmetics across the board, including nail products.
| 15 August 2026 | Brands can no longer manufacture or supply new TPO-containing products. |
| 14 February 2027 | TPO products can no longer be sold in the UK. |
| From 15 Feb 2027 | Nail techs can continue using any existing TPO products they already own until they are finished. |
So there is no need to throw away products you already have.
TPO-free formulas might appear slightly different:
- Incorrect prep and application are more noticeable
- Thick application can lead to undercuring, peeling, and lifting
- Correct curing times and lamp compatibility are now more important than ever
Applying thin, controlled layers is especially important with highly pigmented shades like whites, pastels, dark colours, glitters, and magnetic gels, as thicker layers can prevent proper curing.
Clients may hear the word "banned" and assume products are unsafe, but that's not the case.
This is a regulatory change, not evidence that gel products suddenly became harmful. Educating clients clearly and confidently will help build trust and position you as a knowledgeable professional.
